Foothills of Mount Ida · Near Zaros
A historically vital spiritual and artistic centre during the Cretan Renaissance, closely associated with the icon painter Michael Damaskinos — a contemporary of El Greco. Set on the wooded slopes of Mount Psiloritis— the mountain that was, in ancient Greek religion, the birthplace and throne of Zeus — it features a 15th-century Venetian fountain carved with figures of Adam and Eve and retains a small but exceptional collection of Byzantine artefacts.
