In the 1960s, this remote paradise became a global symbol of freedom. The famous "Beatniks" and international free spirits discovered the ancient Roman caves carved into the cliffs, living a simple, communal life directly on the sand.
Today, Matala has evolved into a wonderful, protected beach enclave. It successfully preserves its relaxed, bohemian charm and slow rhythm of life, worlds apart from the overdeveloped, crowded mass-tourism hubs of Northern Crete. The surrounding region adds to the draw: just 15 kilometers away stands the Minoan Palace of Phaistos, one of the great archaeological sites of the Mediterranean, second only to Knossos. The landscape between coast and hills — olive groves, gorges, wildflower paths — is walking and cycling country of the finest kind.

The 1st Rolling Resort in Matala is a small collection of Rolling Tiny Houses, positioned closer to the water than any other accommodation in the area. This is not a hotel.
It is not a campsite. It is something between the two: private, self-contained, beautifully designed — and rooted in the landscape as though it always belonged here.
The fully equipped Tiny Houses are available for short or long stays throughout the year.
Each Rolling Tiny House at the resort is the "Kreta" — a model conceived and built specifically for the Cretan climate. Its design balances warmth in winter and natural ventilation in summer, with materials and proportions chosen to sit lightly in the rocky, sun-bleached terrain of Southern Crete.
With an area of 27 m² of thoughtfully arranged space, the Kreta offers everything you need and nothing you don't:
Living area — comfortable seating, a work surface, and large windows that frame the landscape
Fully equipped kitchen — for morning coffee, fresh market produce, and evenings in
Bathroom — clean, complete, and well-finished
Sleeping loft — a private retreat above, with the feeling of sleeping among the hills
Each house is designed to accommodate one or two guests (maximum 2 persons) . The scale is intentional: small enough to feel like your own private world, large enough to live in properly — for a long weekend or a long month.
